I visited Sheffield again on 27 August. Thanks to a local friend living there, I know more about Sheffield this time.
The name of Sheffield is derived from the River Sheaf, which runs through the metropolitan city. Sheffield is known as the Steel City since the 19th century when she gained an international reputation for steel production.
The innovation of stainless steel established its roots in industry development. Nowadays, we can experience this significant contribution at the front entrance of the train station. The steel-designed fountain and a waterfall wall speak for the memorial Industrial Revolution.
Outside the city centre, Sheffield enjoys a lot of green space, and a third of the city lies within the Peak District national park. ‘The Peak’ is not so far from the city centre for people to escape from a bustling city life.
This area is characterized by rounded hills, plateaus, and valleys. Tourists can walk on the public footpaths or ride bikes on cycle trails to embrace the wonderful nature.
For thousands of years, the use of the lands for farming or water supply by the human being has changed its natural landscape. Water flows through the River Derwent from the artificial reservoirs - the tailbay - spilling into two divided streams. I was standing here to watch the masterpiece of human civilization.
